What is Inbound Marketing?
Inbound marketing is a marketing methodology that is made to draw customers in and introduce them with quality content. Inbound marketing attracts people’s attention and can captivate their interest. This methodology attracts visitors at the right time by providing customers with information and content which helps in solving the issues that they may have.
Inbound marketing can be done in various ways including:
- Blogs and articles
- Social Media
- Search Engine Optimization
- eBooks
- Video Advertising
The whole point of a successful Inbound Marketing campaign is to broaden the reach, drive quality traffic, engagement and conversions using Owned and Earned media.
Inbound marketing uses Owned and Earned media to engage with customers and potential clients. Here is what Owned and Earned media are:
Owned Media – Owned media is what the business has control over. For example: Company website, company blogs, company social media page, company brochures and so on.
Earned Media – Earned Media on the other hand are anyone that promotes the brand for you and on your behalf. Online Forums and review sites are examples of Earned media. Earned media can be advantageous as it can increase trust and credibility for the brand or business.
Disadvantages of Inbound Marketing
Inbound marketing does have some advantages, but it can also have its drawbacks too.
Patience is required
Inbound marketing campaigns can take time to produce the results and it requires patience. You shouldn’t expect success to happen overnight. For example: It takes a bit of time for Google to move you to the top of the search engine rankings.
What is Outbound Marketing?
Outbound marketing is a marketing methodology and is any kind of marketing where a company or an organisation starts a conversation and sends a message out to an audience. Outbound marketing is about reaching out to potential customers who might have a problem but may not be actively looking for a solution.
There are some examples of Outbound marketing and that includes:
- TV commercials
- Radio advertising
- Flyers and brochures
- Telemarketing
- Direct mail
- Pop-up Ads
Disadvantages of Outbound Marketing
Budget
One of the issues of Outbound marketing is the budget. There are some parts of Outbound marketing which require you to spend money and get results such as TV and radio advertising as highlighted above. Spending money on something that might not guarantee you good results is risky business.
Customers won’t always seem interested
People online nowadays want to find things by themselves rather than being distracted by advertisements. Many people like to discover different things and carry out their research rather than adverts and other forms being shown to them. Outbound marketing tends to interrupt someone’s flow of activity to get attention. A large percentage of people especially on video-sharing platforms such as YouTube tend to skip the advertisements and view the video that they planned to watch.
Advantages of Outbound Marketing
While Outbound marketing may have its disadvantages, it also has some advantages too.
Larger Audience
One of the main benefits of Outbound marketing is that it has the potential to reach a wider audience. This might be an audience who don’t have much idea about your brand or not familiar with it. They may not know about the products or services until they see your advertisement. It is good for raising awareness about your brand.
Conclusion
Inbound and Outbound marketing are both marketing techniques and methodologies to implement. Inbound marketing is quite a cost-effective approach to marketing whereas Outbound marketing can be expensive. One methodology is not better or worse than compared to the other methodology. It is best to use a mixture of Inbound marketing and Outbound marketing into your marketing strategies.
